Carpenter vs joiner: what's the difference and who do you need?

Published 2026-01-22 · by Joshua Lewis

A joiner works in a workshop making things (stairs, doors, cabinetry). A carpenter works on-site installing them. In practice, most UK tradespeople do both — which is why we call ourselves carpenters AND joiners.

Carpenter vs joiner: what's the difference and who do you need?

The traditional split

Go back 50 years and the trades were clearly separated. The joiner was in a workshop with a table saw, thicknesser and planer, making the components. The carpenter was on-site with a hammer, chisel and nails, fitting them. Stairs, sash windows and panelled doors were made by joiners. Roof structures, stud walls and floorboards were cut and fitted by carpenters.

Why the line has blurred

Flat-pack kits, off-the-shelf kitchen units and mass-produced doors changed the maths. Most carpentry work today is install-led: you take a factory-made component and fit it. At the same time, modern tools (track saws, battery routers, better cordless) mean a lot of the 'joinery' work that used to need a workshop can be done on-site. So the average UK carpenter hangs doors, fits skirting, builds decks AND occasionally makes a bespoke piece on-site.

Which do you need?

Don't overthink it. Describe the job and let the tradesperson tell you whether they're the right fit. If it's clearly workshop-led (a fully bespoke oak staircase, one-off furniture, a panelled library) you want someone with workshop capacity. If it's site-led (fitting a kitchen, hanging doors, decking, roofing) you want a carpenter with good on-site finishing skill.

For most homeowners in Crawley, the right question isn't 'carpenter or joiner' — it's 'have they done work like this before, and can I see it?'

Common questions

Are you a carpenter or a joiner?

Both. We call ourselves Lewis Brothers Carpentry because the majority of our work is on-site installation, but we do bespoke joinery jobs too.

Do I need different insurance if I hire a joiner vs a carpenter?

No — public liability insurance works the same for both. Confirm any tradesperson you hire carries at least £2m cover.
